Citrus County, Florida - In an Inverness courtroom on Monday, April 1, 2024, 46 year-old Jeromee Wade Greenough of Zephyrhills, Florida was sentenced to serve 40 years in the Florida Department of Corrections on charges related to a July 21, 2022 bank robbery in Crystal River, Florida.
Greenough was found guilty on charges of robbery with a weapon, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon while masked without the intent to kill, two counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and fleeing from and eluding law enforcement.
As a result of his habitual offender status as a Prison Releasee Reoffender, Greenough will serve 30 years of his sentence, day for day, with no gain time.
Prior to Greenough's July 2022 arrest, he had been released from the U.S. Bureau of Prisons on September 8, 2020 after serving a 19-year sentence for committing eight armed bank robberies.
"Justice prevails when the relentless pursuit of law enforcement meets the unwavering commitment of prosecutors," ssaid State Attorney Bill Gladson of Florida's Fifth Judicial Circuit. "Greenough willfully disregarded the law while placing others in grave danger. I commend our fellow law enforcement partners for protecting our community and the prosecutors in this case for ensuring accountability."
Shortly after 11:00 am on July 21, 2022, Citrus County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) officials received an alarm call warning that a robbery was in progress at the TD Bank, located at 1000 SE U.S. Highway 19 in Crystal River. Greenough had entered the bank brandishing a firearm - which was later determined to be a BB gun - and demanded money from the teller's counter. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, he fled the scene in a white vehicle. There were no customers inside the bank at the time of the armed robbery.
CCSO deputies and detectives and Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) trooopers located Greenough traveling down Fort Island Trail in Crystal River which heads west to the Gulf of Mexico.
When approached by law enforcement, Greenough attempted to evade capture by speeding off in his vehicle, endangering the lives of officers by swerving his vehicle toward two of the patrol vehicles.
Law enforcement personnel deployed spike strips which deflated Greenough's tires. Despite this, he continued to drive on deflated tires until the FHP executed a pursuit intervention technique - commonly know as a PIT maneuver, further immobilizing the vehicle.
Greenough exited his vehicle, armed himself with an actual rifle, and took off running toward a playground area, when he was shot by a FHP trooper. He was taken into custody in the area between N. Regatta Point and Fort Island Gulf Beach.
None of the law enforcement officers were harmed during the incident. Greenough received immediate first aid on the scene of the shooting, and was then transported to a medical facility for treatment of his injuries.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Tara Hartman and Kevin Davis.
