Threatening letter with substance, mailed to Citrus County Courthouse, under investigation

Citrus County, Florida - On April 7, 2025, as envelope was received at the Citrus County Courthouse thorough the U.S. Postal Service mail, addressed to several courthouse staff members. Inside the envelope was a letter that contained threatening language and a then-unidentified substance.
Following established safety protocols, courthouse staff members immediately contacted the Citrus County Sheriff's Office Bomb Team and Citrus County Fire Rescue Hazmat (hazardous materials) Team. The envelope was moved to an unspecified safe location, where testing identified the substance as a common household substance that would have posed no immediate threat to the courtroom or any disruption to its operations.
The Criminal Investigations Division (CID) of Citrus County Sheriff's Office has taken over the case, and will conduct an investigation to identify the person who mailed the letter and determine what charges apply.
