About 8:00 pm on Thursday evening, February 6, 2025, Levy County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to an Inglis home due to the report of a person being shot.

Deputies arrived at the home to find both a child and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds inside the home.

The woman and the child were both airlifted to an unspecified area trauma center by ShandsCair - UF Health. The child did not survive the injury, and the woman was in critical condition, as of 10:50 am on Friday, February 7, 2025.

Detectives determined that two children had been playing inside a room in the home when one of the children accessed an unsecured firearm, and the gun accidently discharged. The single round that was fired struck the woman and the other child, who were all within the same room.

LCSO detectives are working to determine how this tragic event occurred. The names of those involved in this incident are not being released at this time, as this investigation is ongoing.

Levy County Sheriff Bobby McCallum urged the Inglis community, "Please lift this family in prayer, as they have a long healing process ahead of them."
