Elissa Bentley, 39, of Morriston, FL, was arrested by the Levy County Sheriff's Office, Nov. 25, 2024, charged with criminal mischief with damage to property in the amount of $200 or less, unarmed burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, and child neglect without great bodily harm ($11,000 bond).
According to the arrest report, the victim told a LCSO deputy that she arrived home to find a woman (later identified as Bentley) attempting to conceal herself near the north end of her residence where her fence meets her house. She said she noticed a window screen lying on the grass, and the window was open, and when she'd left her house, the window was unlocked and partially open so her two dogs could get fresh air. She said that she'd asked Bentley what she was doing at her house, and Bentley allegedly replied that she'd been told to come there and get a letter. The victim said she asked Bentley, "From whom are your supposed to get a letter?" and Bentley replied, as she walked north, toward a wooded area, "I don't know. I told you guys. I told you guys."
The deputy reported that the victim's dogs were a Pit bull and a German shepherd, and the Pit bull was aggressively barking while the deputy spoke with the victim and had to be placed in a different room. The victim speculated to the deputy that the dogs are likely the reason Bentley did not go into the house, that nothing was missing, and money she'd left on a table in the room with the open window was still there.
The victim had taken a photograph of Bentley with her cell phone, and Bentley was later identified from the photograph by way of social media.
Bentley denied tampering with the window screen and told the deputy that she had not touched or opened the window, that the two dogs had scratched the screen and jumped out of the window. Bentley told the deputy that she'd spent the rest of the day caring for and bathing a two year-old child until the child's mother returned home from work, later in the evening. Bentley had left the child unattended while at the victim's house. She told the deputy that she didn't know why she hadn't taken the child with her, but if she had taken the child with her, the child would have gotten hurt running through the woods, and the child had a fluffy dog with her. She also said that she believed a drone had been flying over her house while she was caring for the child.
