Two Citrus County correctional officers arrested on drug charges in Hernando County

Brooksville, Florida - On March 19, 2024, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Vice and Narcotics Unit executed a search warrant at a residence located at 9553 Whisper Ridge Trail in Royal Highlands, Florida, north of Weeki Wachee, Florida.

The search warrant was the result of an investigation in which undercover detectives purchased fentanyl from a resident of the home, 32 year-old Matthew Devorak.

During the search of the residence, detectives located items determined to belong to Devorak, which included fentanyl, methamphetamine, marijuana, various prescription medications that were not prescribed for Mr. Devorak, and drug paraphernalia. 

Devorak was taken into custody, charged with possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance (fentanyl), possession of a controlled substance (alprazolam), possession of a controlled substance (lorazepam), possession of a controlled substance (bupropion hydrochloride), possession of a controlled substance (buprenorphine hydrochloride) and possession of drug paraphernalia; his bond was set at $17,000.

Another resident of the home, also present during the search, was 43 year-old Michael D. Smith, who was found to be in possession of fentanyl and drug paraphernalia. He was also taken into custody, charged with possession of a controlled substance (fentanyl) and possession of drug paraphernalia; his bond was set at $6,000.

Both men were incarcerated at the Hernando County Detention Center in Brooksville, Florida.

According to ABC Action News, Devorak and Smith were both employed by CoreCivic as correctional officers at the Citrus County Detention Facility in Lecanto, Florida, and both were placed on administrative leave.
