Levy County Sheriff's Office (LCSO), October 25, 2023
In August of 2022, five people attempted to commit a home invasion robbery in Rosewood, Florida, but failed to do so when they were confronted by the armed homeowner, who exchanged gunfire with the perpetrators, which resulted in one of the suspects being shot. The homeowner was not injured by the gunfire exchange.
The armed assailants fled the scene, headed toward Gainesville, and dropped off their injured companion at the UF Health Emergency Center - Kanapaha, located at 7405 SW Archer Rd., in Gainesville, Florida. The assailant did not survive his injuries.
In May and July 2023, three of the four surviving suspects entered into negotiated guilty plea agreements with the State of Florida to serve time with the Florida Department of Corrections (DOC):
Jerry Cordel Clanton, 31, of Gainesville, Florida will serve 15 years.
Ocean Carey Dunn, 25, of Morriston, Florida will serve 10 years.
Aonesty Torriana Smith, 22, of Gainesville, Florida will serve 10 years.
On October 11, 2023, the fourth surviving defendant, Theriyus Leequina Banks, 24, of Gainesville, Florida, accepted a plea agreement to serve 20 years with the DOC.
The Levy County Sheriff's Office partnered with the Alachua County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in this investigation. The quick action and investigative efforts by law enforcement resulted in the quick apprehension of these four dangerous individuals.
