Williston man shot, killed after rushing at deputies investigating report of attempted suicide

Williston (Levy County), Florida - Due to a report of a person attempting to commit suicide by overdose, about 1:30 pm on Saturday, March 4, 2023, deputies with the Levy County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) and emergency medical services personnel were dispatched to a home located on NE 151st Terrace in the Williston Highlands subdivision. 

Two deputies who initially arrived at the location were confronted by a man armed with a handgun. The deputies ordered the man to drop his weapon, but instead, he rushed at the deputies. Both deputies discharged their firearms, and the man was struck by gunfire. The man, identified only as a 37 year old white male, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene of the incident. Neither of the deputies was injured during this altercation.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will complete the investigation, and at the time of the initial press release, shortly beforfe 7:00 pm, March 4, the crime scene was still active. 

Both deputies will be placed on paid administrative leave, as per the agency's policy, until this investigation is complete. No names will be released until the investigation has been completed by the FDLE. 

According to LCSO Lt. Scott Tummond, "There is no current threat to the community, and (Levy County) Sheriff (Bobby) McCallum asks that we keep everyone involved in our prayers."
