Human skeletal remains found in Crystal River, FL canal

Human skeletal remains were found in a canal off the Crystal River in the Woodlands Estates area of Crystal River, Florida on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2021. According to Alexandria Perkins, Community Relations Specialist with the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, her agency received a phone call on Wednesday, Sept. 8, from a person who reported that he/she had seen bones that day while on the Churchhouse Hammock Trail in Crystal River, and since the person did not know if they were human or animal, they had contacted law enforcement. Due to the late hour and inclement weather, a deputy stayed with the remains overnight. The following day, the remains were recovered, with personnel on scene from the Distric 5 Medical Examiner's Office, and it was determined that the bones were indeed human, but no further information is available at this time.
