Levy County Sheriff's Office, Bronson, Florida
Levy County, Florida - About 11:17 pm on Saturday, April 17, a vehicle crashed head-on into the patrol vehicle of a deputy with the Levy County Sheriff's Office who was conducting traffic enforcement in Bronson, Florida at the intersection of NE 99 Place and NE 105 Avenue. The traffic enforcement was being conducted due to numerous complaints by nearby residents, of drivers running the stop sign at the intersection.
The deputy was inside his patrol vehicle that was parked near the intersection, so that he would be able to see any vehicle that failed to stop at the stop sign. While the deputy was parked near the intersection, a Nissan passenger car that approached the intersection on NE 105th Avenue, traveling north, struck the deputy's parked vehicle, head-on. The force of the impact totaled both vehicles.
The LCSO deputy was transported to a nearby trauma center with non-life-threatening injuries and underwent surgery on Monday morning, April 19. The female driver of the Nissan sustained minor injuries.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, and it is suspected that the driver was impaired at the time of the crash. A toxicology report on the driver is pending, according to LCSO Lt. Scott Tummond, and it is anticipated that charges will be filed on the driver of the Nissan for driving under the influence.
The deputy involved in the incident has two years of law enforcement experience with the LCSO and was previously employed by the Cedar Key Police Department.
