Citrus County, Florida - One youth died and three others were injured, two seriously, in a single-vehicle crash that occurred at 4:25 pm, Saturday afternoon, June 17, 2023, in Crystal River, Florida.
According to the Florida HIghway Patrol (FHP), the youth who died, a 16 year-old male from Lecanto, Florida, was driving a Jeep Cherokee sport utility vehicle, traveling east on West Fort Island Trail, west of North Seabreeze Point, when he lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a curve in the roadway. The vehicle departed from the roadway and overturned several times. While overturning, the driver and his seven year-old brother were ejected from the vehicle. The driver died at the scene of the crash. His brother, also from Lecanto, suffered serious injuries.
Two other teens were passengers inside the vehicle, an 18 year-old male from Hernando, Florida, who received minor injuries, and a 15 year-old female from Crystal River, Florida who suffered serious injuries.
The FHP press release stated that none of the passengers was wearing a seatbelt.
