National Influenza Vaccination Week: Dec. 5 - 9, 2022
During December 5-9 we will be observing National Influenza Vaccination Week by reminding everyone, age 6 months and older, that now is the time to get a flu vaccine. Vaccination is particularly important for people who are at higher risk of developing serious flu complications, including people 65 and over. We hope you will join us this year as we encourage everyone to protect themselves and their loved ones from the flu this season by getting a flu vaccine.
CAREGIVERS - WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH AN IMPORTANT SURVEY!
On behalf of the State of Florida, the Department of Elder Affairs, and the State Health Improvement Plan (SHIP) Priority Area 1, please share this survey with caregivers.
Florida has the second-highest prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) with over 580,000 residents with a diagnosis of dementia. ADRD not only affects the individual, but also those who provide care for them and their family. In Florida, we have over 806,000 individuals providing unpaid care for their loved ones. This care is valued at over $20.6 billion.
Florida’s numbers are continuing to grow and are predicted to increase by over 25 percent by 2025. Due to this reality, Florida is doing it all it can to be dementia capable.
Please feel free to share this survey widely. Please access the SHIP Dementia Caregiver Survey here: https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/5b2b041b2d1244f68dc138f9da85c6f5.
DONATE TO HELP 12 SENIOR CLIENTS IN NEED DURING THE UPCOMING HOLIDAYS
Every year, Elder Options collects DONATIONS for clients in need of support during the holidays. This year, we are seeking cash donations for 12 Elder Options needy clients. Our goal is to give each person a $100.00 Walmart gift card to purchase needed items such as food, clothing, ensure nutritional supplements, depends incontinence brfiefs, toiletries, and other items. All donations must be provided by December 15, 2022. You can make your gift at this link - https://agingresources.org/donate-today/ - stating "Holiday Client Gift" in the note section. You can also mail or drop off a gift to Elder Options, 100 SW 75th St, Suite 301, Gainesville, FL 32607.
UNDERSTANDING PARKINSON'S DISEASE
Parkinson’s disease (PD) affects people of all races, ethnicities and ages. However, there is a common misconception that PD only impacts older white men. This has been exacerbated and stereotyped by images over the internet and social media of older white men demonstrating temors and a hunched-over posture. This assumption, that PD affects primarily white men, has contributed to a disparity in racial and ethnic minorities across the country.
With this bias, and the fact that many PD symptoms can mimic typical aging, so without proper health education or training to community physicians, the early symptoms of PD can often be overlooked or misdiagnosed; epidemiology studies show that up to 78% of PD cases are undiagnosed.
