Homosassa, Florida – At 12:49 a.m., early Friday morning, March 28, 2025, Citrus County Fire Rescue was dispatched to a residence located on Mimosa Court East, in the Sugarmill Woods area of Homosassa, due to a reported fire. Firefighters arrived at the location to find an approximately 2,000 square foot, single-story, concrete block home, with smoke coming from the front door.

The homeowner told fire crews that all occupants had safely exited the residence. A search of the residence confirmed that it was clear of occupants.

A fire attack was initiated by deploying a hose line through the front door into the home. The fire was quickly brought under control.

Due to unspecified conditions observed at the scene, limited overhaul was conducted to preserve potential evidence. A battalion chief determined that the fire’s origin appeared suspicious, and thus requested the response of the Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office to investigate the fire, working in conjunction with the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office.

Power to the home was secured by Duke Energy, and victim advocate services were requested to assist with securing the home. Significant damage to the residence was estimated at approximately $100,000. There were no reported injuries to residents or responding personnel. The last fire unit cleared the scene at 4:26 a.m.

While this incident remains under investigation, Citrus County Fire Rescue reminds all residents to ensure smoke alarms are present and in working order in every sleeping area and on every level of the home. Early detection can save lives. Test alarms monthly and replace batteries twice yearly or as needed.
