Hernando, Florida – About 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, Citrus County Fire Rescue was dispatched to E. Cleveland Street in Hernando due to a reported fire. Firefighters arrived at the location to find a 2,000 square-foot, single-story residence with heavy smoke showing from all sides.

A handline was deployed to the garage, where the flames were most prominent. Searches confirmed that all occupants were out of the home. As fire suppression continued, crews discovered that the attic fire was progressing rapidly due to high ceilings. Two ventilation holes were cut, which halted the fire's advancement. After the fire was extinguished, the last unit cleared the scene at 7:16 p.m.

Fire investigators determined that the blaze originated in the garage during the installation of a new hose bib on the side of the home. The plumber accidentally ignited a fire while soldering, and used a fire extinguisher to suppress visible flames. Believing the fire was out, the plumber left the residence. Approximately 15 minutes later, the home's smoke alarm activated, which alerted the residents, who discovered flames in the garage and dialed 911.

Victim advocate services were requested to assist the residents. The fire caused an estimated $200,000 in damages.  No injuries were reported.

Fire Safety Message: Safe Soldering Practices Save Homes

Home projects involving soldering or open flames can pose significant fire risks. Always keep a fire extinguisher nearby, ensure the work area is clear of flammable materials, and monitor the site for at least 30 minutes after completing the work. Never leave the area unattended until you are certain no heat remains.

Smoke Alarms: Your First Line of Defense

This incident underscores the importance of working smoke alarms. The alarm activation gave residents critical moments to evacuate the home and call 911. Remember to test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries twice each year. A working smoke alarm can save lives - and property.
