Hernando, Florida – About 4:40 p.m. on Thursday, February 27, 2025, Citrus County Fire Rescue was dispatched to a residence located on N. Eisenhower Ave. in Hernando due to a reported fire.

Firefighters arrived at the location to find an approximately 2,000 square feet, single-story residence, with smoke showing from the roof on the side of the home. A handline was entered via the front door. Moderate smoke conditions were found inside the home, visibly coming from the roof, but no active fire was found. Interior crews quickly determined the fire was under control, that it had been extinguished with no extension found. No one was located inside the home.

Crews ventilated the home and tested for carbon monoxide before turning the residence back over to the homeowner. The power was isolated to the affected area of the home, which was the kitchen. An investigation determined that the fire originated as a grease fire on the stove, which extended into the microwave and surrounding cabinetry, and was confined to that area. Crews removed a hot pan from the home and utilized a positive pressure ventilation (PPV) fan to clear the remaining smoke. The last fire unit cleared the scene at 5:34 p.m.

Smoke detectors were present within the home; they operated properly and alerted the occupants to the fire, which allowed them to safely evacuate the home. No injuries were reported to the home's occupants or firefighters.

The Red Cross and 1-800-BoardUp were contacted to assist the homeowner.

Estimated damages were estimated at approximately $10,000. The fire was classified as unintentional and accidental.

Citrus County Fire Rescue cautions residents to never leave cooking items unattended, and to install smoke detectors in your hoe and periodically ensure they are properly functioning. Working smoke detectors save lives.
