Citrus County Fire Rescue (CCFR)
Homosassa, Florida - After a late night fire on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, a person was found deceased inside a home located on Smilax Court North, in the Sugarmill Woods neighborhood of Homosassa.
At 11:19 pm, units were dispatched to the residence, and within minutes, Engine 18 from the Sugarmill Woods fire station arrived on scene to find the 2,400 square foot residence 80% involved in flames. Due to the intensity of the fire, crews initiated a defensive attack to contain the blaze and protect neighboring homes. Once conditions allowed it, a thorough search of the residence was conducted, and tragically, a deceased person was discovered inside the home.
Duke Energy responded to the scene to secure electrical hazards, and Citrus County Fire Rescue crews completed extensive overhaul operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished. The last unit cleared the scene at 3:29 am.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office, Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, and Citrus County Medical Examiner and Coroner from Leesburg, Florida. Due to the extensive damage and the ongoing investigation, the origin and cause of the fire remain undetermined at this time, although the investigation is ongoing.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin," said Citrus County Fire Rescue Communications Specialist Cortney Marsh. "This tragic incident serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of fire safety. CCFR encourages all residents to check their smoke alarms regularly and develop a home escape plan."
