Juveniles find and attempt to extinguish Dunnellon shed fire; no injuries reported

Dunnellon, Florida – At 5:57 pm on Friday, January 24, 2025, Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to a shed fire on West Disney Lane in Dunnellon.
Fire rescue arrived on scene to find a 12 by 24 foot shed at the rear of the property fully engulfed in flames and initiated fire suppression efforts. Due to a septic tank drain field obstructing access, personnel stretched a handline to the shed from a safe distance. Water was applied to the fire at 6:12 pm, and the blaze was brought under control within two minutes. Suppression and mop-up operations required approximately 1,000 gallons of water. The last unit cleared the scene at 7:42 pm.
The fire was discovered by two juveniles who arrived at the residence by way of a school bus to retrieve an item. Unable to extinguish the flames themselves, they contacted one of their fathers, who alerted the fire department. The homeowner was out of the country at the time, but their daughter arrived on the scene and was briefed on the situation.
Due to the extent of the fire damage, the cause of the fire remains undetermined. It was unclear whether the shed was connected to an active power source.
The property and content loss are estimated at approximately $7,500.
No injuries were reported.
