Smoke detectors alert Lecanto residents to electrical fire; two cats rescued unharmed

Lecanto, Florida – At 11:30 am on Monday, January 13, 2025, Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to a residence located on W. Cardinal Street in Lecanto, due to a report of an electrical issue involving smoke.
Firefighters arrived at the home at 11:42 am to find a 2,000 square-foot, single-story double-wide mobile home with black smoke coming from the eaves. Fire suppression activities were initiated. After skirting was removed on the front of the home, flames were visible. Light to moderate smoke was noted inside the home, but no active flames or heat noted in the main living areas.
The home's occupants had safely evacuated the home. Fire crews were informed that two cats remained inside the home. The cats were located and safely removed from the home,
An electrician troubleshooting a partial power outage in the home revealed that the fire originated from an electrical issue in the crawlspace. The power company disconnected the meter, ensuring safety from further electrical hazards.
The fire was swiftly extinguished. After cleanup operations, the last unit cleared the scene at 1:20 pm.
Damages to the home and its contents estimated at $30,000.
The home was equipped with functioning smoke detectors, which alerted the occupants to the fire, allowing them to safely evacuate the home. Citrus County Fire Rescue reminds residents as to the importance of smoke detectors in protecting lives and property .
A resident of the home experienced a medical issue and was transported to a medical facility for evaluation by Rescue 3 from the Homosassa Fire Station.
Citrus County Fire Rescue coordinated with 1-800-Board-Up and the Red Cross to provide support to the displaced residents. The Florida State Fire Marshal was also informed of the fire, which was classified as unintentional.
