Chimney fire damages Homosassa residence; no injuries reported; home fire safety tips

Citrus County Fire Rescue (CCFR)

Homosassa, Florida – At 7:31 am on Sunday, November 24, 2024, Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to a residence located on W. Pebble Ln. in Homosassa, due to a report of a fire involving a chimney.

Fire rescue personnel arrived on scene to find smoke coming from the chimney and surrounding areas. Firefighters made entry into the home
to extinguish the chimney fire and also addressed the fire from the exterior of the home. Efforts were coordinated to check for fire extension and ensure complete extinguishment of the fire, followed by mop-up operations, ventilation, and the elimination of remaining hot spots. All units were cleared from the scene at 8:32 am after ensuring the fire was fully extinguished and the home was safe. 

Damages were estimated at approximately $6,000.  No injuries were reported.

Chimney Safety Reminder

This incident highlights the importance of chimney safety as we enter the cooler months.

As temperatures drop and residents use fireplaces to heat their homes, Citrus County Fire Rescue urges the community to practice chimney safety: 
• Have Your Chimney Inspected and Cleaned Annually 
Creosote buildup in chimneys is a leading cause of chimney fires. Schedule regular inspections and cleaning by a certified professional.
• Burn the Right Fuel 
Use only seasoned, dry wood to minimize creosote buildup. Avoid burning trash, cardboard, or green wood.
• Install and Test Smoke Alarms 
Ensure your home is equipped with working smoke alarms near sleeping areas and on every level of your home.
• Use a Chimney Cap
A chimney cap prevents debris, animals, and rain from entering, reducing potential fire risks.
• Never Leave a Fire Unattended
Always extinguish the fire completely before leaving the home or going to bed. 
 
By taking these precautions, residents can enjoy their fireplaces safely and reduce the risk of chimney fires.
