Homosassa, Florida – At approximately 7:59 am, on Thursday, November 21, 2024, Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to W. Minuteman St. in Homosassa due to a reported fire.

At 8:04 am, first responders arrived at the location to find a 1,000 square-foot wood frame shed fully involved in flames. Firefighters deployed a hose line to the fire, and unplugged an extension cord, which was the only source of electricity to the shed, and had numerous items plugged into it.

The fire was brought under control by 8:14 am, followed by an extensive overhaul operation to ensure the blaze was completely extinguished. Fire assignments were completed, and units were released by 9:42 am. The structure was a total loss (see photo, above left)

Community partner 1-800-BoardUp was contacted to provide immediate assistance to the affected occupant and their 9 month-old son. The victim advocate services included essential items (see photo, above right) such as diapers, baby wipes, clothing, and a jacket to help the family begin their recovery process. Citrus County Fire Rescue extends its gratitude to 1-800-BoardUp for their compassionate response.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined after investigation, but it is likely related to the extension cord with multiple connections.

Citrus County Fire Rescue urges residents to follow electrical safety guidelines, and to especially avoid overloading extension cords.
