Large shed catches fire in Floral City as result of illegal yard fire

Floral City, Florida — At 5:01 pm on Sunday, May 5, 2024, Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to a location on S. Parkside Ave. in Floral City due to a reported shed fire.
Firefighters from Floral City arrived on scene, along with a rescue unit, to find a 10 feet by 15 feet shed fully engulfed in flames. Fire extinguishment began immediately, and no further structures were damaged and the fire was brought under control at 5:12 pm, so the assistance of additional incoming units was canceled. After overhaul and mop up, the last unit cleared the scene at 5:38 pm.
No injuries were reported. It was determined that the fire originated from an illegal burn located approximately 10 feet from the shed.
Authorization is not required to burn yard waste as long as you meet the required setbacks and there are no local, city, or county ordinances in place that prohibit burning.
