Three dogs perish in Crystal River fire; home a total loss, with no insurance
Citrus County Fire Rescue (CCFR)
Crystal River, Florida — At 2:23 pm on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to a residence located on W. Admiral Byrd Ln. in Crystal River due to a reported structure fire.
Fire rescue personnel arrived on scene to find a double wide manufactured home with smoke and flames coming from a corner of the home.
Fire rescue crews deployed a pre-connected handline to the front door to begin extinguishment activities. Firefighting operations continued until the fire was brought under control, as of 2:42 pm. After overhaul and mop up, the last unit cleared the scene at 4:26 pm. The power company responded to the scene to disconnect the power to ensure safety.
Despite the resuscitation efforts of first responders and neighbors, the smoke conditions inside the residence claimed the lives of three dogs. No other occupants were inside the home at the time of the fire, and no other injuries were reported.
The investigation into the cause of the fire proved challenging due to the extensive damage caused by the fire, which began in a bedroom. The fire is believed to be accidental. The homeowner mentioned potential electrical issues, as the house had undergone rewiring five years previously. However, the evidence was inconclusive.
The residence was a total loss. A press release stated that the homeowner and the renter both lacked insurance coverage. Assistance was offered to and declined by the tenant.
Firefighters from the Connell Heights, Homosassa, DeRosa, Pine Ridge, Kensington, and Citrus Springs fire stations arrived on scene, along with a rescue unit.
