One cat dies but numerous animals saved from Homosassa home fire

Homosassa, Florida — At 1:12 pm on Thursday, April 4, 2024, Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to a residence located on W. Winter Sun Lane in Homosassa due to a reported fire.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find an approximately 2,500 square foot, single story wood frame residence 50% involved with fire. The fire was mostly contained to the front porch area, with dark smoke coming from the eves which indicated that fire was in the attic.

A 360-degree inspection of the property identified a below-grade pool as a potential hazard.

Entry was made through the front door to extinguish the attic fire as they progressed through the residence. 

A search was conducted. Three dogs, two cats, two lizards, a bird and numeous fish were removed from the residence. Oxygen was administered to one cat and two dogs, who all recovered quickly and were secured by animal control. One cat perished, but all the other animals were safely removed from the home. No other occupants were located inside the residence at the time of the fire, and no other injuries were reported. 

The fire was brought under control as of 1:37 pm. After overhaul and mop up, the last unit cleared the scene at 3:40 pm.

The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office arrived on scene to investigate the cause and origin of the fire. 

Damage were estimated at $166,000. Assistance was offered to and declined by the homeowner. 

Firefighters from the Homosassa, Sugarmill Woods, Pine Ridge, Kensington, Connell Heights, Hernando and Highlands fire stations arrived on scene, along with a safety captain, multiple chief officers, the rehab unit, and a rescue unit.
