Three dogs perish in Hernando, FL camper fire

Hernando, Florida - At 12:18 pm on Saturday afternoon, March 2, 2024, Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to a camper, located at a N. Sourgum Terrace, Hernando, Florida property, due to a reported fire.

Fire rescue personnel arrived at the location to find a pull behind-style camper fully involved with fire. A defensive attack was established to begin fire suppression. All occupants had already safely evacuated themselves from the camper. Once the fire was under control, firefighters conducted a search of the camper, and three dogs were found inside, deceased. No other injuries were sustained.  

The fire was brought under control as of 12:31 pm. After overhaul and mop up, the last unit cleared the scene at 1:36 pm.

Upon completion of an investigation, the fire is believed to be accidental; it began in the left rear of the camper in the area of the electrical panel. The camper was plugged into an extension cord with a homemade junction box. The camper was a total loss. 
 
Firefighters from the Hernando, Highlands and Citrus Springs fire stations arrived on scene, along with a safety captain and a rescue unit.
