Hernando, Florida RV fire under investigationĀ

Citrus County Fire Rescue (CCFR)

Hernando, Florida — At 6:33 pm on Monday, January 15, 2024, Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to the Bearhead Hammock Recreational Area on N. Lecanto Hwy. in Hernando due to the report of a recreational vehicle (RV) fire. Fire personnel arrived on scene to find a 2008 Fleetwood Discovery Class A motorhome with smoke showing, but the fire was no longer active. An inspection confirmed that the fire was extinguished, although still smoldering. No one was inside the RV. The power to the RV was secured. Approximately 50% of the RV was damaged by fire, with heat and smoke damage throughout the interior.
 
A Citrus County Sheriff’s Office deputy was first to arrive on scene. He advised fire personnel that he found smoke coming from the small window on the front side of the RV, and when he opened the door, the fire was already extinguished, with smoke inside the RV and damage from the fire and heat.

The owner of the RV was contacted. He told officials that he and his girlfriend had returned from the trail and arrived at the campground about 3:00 pm. He said they heard smoke detectors sounding inside the RV, saw smoke coming from the small window on the front side of the RV and an orange glow. He said they called 9-1-1 for assistance.

The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office arrived on scene at 9:30 pm to conduct their investigation. The scene was turned over to the RV owner and law enforcement. The last unit cleared the scene at 11:13 pm. No injuries were reported. Assistance for temporary accommodationa for the RV occupants was requested by fire personnel. 

Firefighters from the Hernando and Citrus Springs fire stations arrived on scene, along with a rescue unit.
