Homosassa residence damaged by fire caused by refrigerator on porch

Homosassa, Florida — At 5:01 pm on Thursday, January 11, 2024, Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to a esidence located on S. Straight Ave. in Homosassa due to a reported structure fire.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find a double wide mobile home approximately 50% involved with fire. Neighbors told firefighters they were unsure if the owner was home.  Arriving units began fire suppression and made entry into the residence, and no one was found inside.  The fire was brought under control as of 5:35 pm. The power company arrived on scene to secure the power. After overhaul and mop up, the last unit cleared the scene at 7:25 pm.

The property owner arrived on scene and was taken through the residence while fire personnel
removed some personal items for the owner. No injuries were reported. Damages were estimated at $118,700. The investigation revealed that the fire began in the area of a refrigerator on the back porch, and it is believed to be accidental.

Firefighters from the Connell Heights, Homosassa, Sugarmill Woods, Pine Ridge, Floral City, Kensington, and Highlands fire stations arrived on scene, along with a safety captain, a rescue unit and the
rehab unit from the Citrus Springs Fire Station.
