Dunnellon, Florida — At 8:22 pm on Friday, December 22, 2023, Citrus County Fire Rescue (CCFR) responded to a residence located on W. Cypress Dr. in Dunnellon, due to a reported fire.

Firefighters arrived at the location to find an approximately 2,000 square feet residence approximately 75% involved with fire, with flames coming through the roof.

Firefighters began a defensive attack on the home and provided protection for large equipment and a shed at the side of the residence. During a 360-degree inspection, a small propane tank was removed from the outside of the home. Incoming units secured the power and conducted searches of the home, with no one found inside. The property owner was reached by phone and confirmed that the residence was unoccupied. Due to a lack of hydrants in the area, water shuttles were used for the water supply until the fire was under control. The power company arrived on scene to secure the power and remove the meter. The fire was brought under control as of 8:54 pm. After overhaul and mop up, the last unit cleared the scene at 11:56 pm. No injuries were reported.

Damages were estimated at $266,000. The fire appears to have been accidental, caused by a piece of heavy equipment, recently used, being parked too close to the residence.

Firefighters from the Hernando, DeRosa, Citrus Springs, Kensington, Connell Heights and Highlands fire stations responded to the fire, along with a safety captain, a rescue unit, and the rehab unit from the Citrus Springs Fire Station.
