Man found dead inside mobile home destroyed by fire on N. Florida Ave. in Hernando

Hernando, Florida — One person died in a mobile home fire that occurred on Sunday morning, November 26, 2023, at a residence located on N. Florida Ave. (US 41) in Hernando. There were no other occupants in the building at the time of the fire. Identification of the victim is pending notification of family members.

At 12:10 am, Citrus County Fire Rescue (CCFR) responded to the residence due to the report of a fire. Firefighters arrived at the residence to find a single wide mobile home 50% involved with flames, with a person possibly entrapped inside the residence, according to the call log.  

Firefighters made entry into the residence, to seach for occupants and extinguish flames, and a command station was established. One of the home's two residents advised firefighters that only one person was inside the home, in the bedroom. One adult male was found inside the home, deceased. The home's surviving occupant told firefighters that she had been at a friend’s home doing laundry, and found her residence on fire when she returned home. She was provided with victim assistance services.     

The fire was brought under control at 12:26 am. After overhaul and mop up, the last unit cleared the scene at 3:48 am. The residence was a total loss. The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office arrived on scene to investigate the cause and origin of the fire.  

Firefighters from the Hernando, Citrus Springs, Kensington, Connell Heights, Highlands, and Pine Ridge fire stations responded to the fire, along with a safety captain, a rescue unit, and the Rehab Unit from the Citrus Springs Fire Station.
