Inverness, Florida - At 8:41 am on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to an E. Leaf Court, Inverness residence due to a reported fire. Numerous 9-1-1 calls reported that a two-story residence was fully engulfed in flames, that there were many animals trapped inside the home, but it was unknown at the time if any people were home or possibly trapped inside the home.
Firefighters arrived at the residence to find a residence, on stilts, fully involved with fire. The second floor was mostly collapsed, and there were live power lines on one side of the residence. Firefighters requested that the power company secure the power.
A defensive attack was established. Crews began to extinguish the fire and protect nearby exposures. The fire was brought under control as of 9:12 am, and the last unit cleared the scene at 12:33 pm. Once the fire was brought under control, extensive overhaul and mop up operations were conducted.
Neighbors explained to command firefighters that they had spoken with the homeowner and had been advised that the home was unoccupied at the time the fire had started.
The investigation revealed that the homeowner had left the residence at approximately 7:30 am. The homeowner advised firefighters that fans and lighting had been left on for the animals on the bottom floor. The only animal located safe was a pig, according to a CCFR press release.
The residence was a total loss. The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted to investigate the fire.
Firefighters from the Hernando, Homosassa, Floral City, Kensington, Connell Heights, Highlands, and Citrus Springs fire stations responded to the scene, along with a rescue unit, safety officer, and the Rehab Unit from the Citrus Springs Fire Station.
