Homosassa home damaged by fire that appears accidental; no injuries reported

Citrus County Fire Rescue (CCFR)

Homosassa, Florida - At 3:53 am on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to S. Hazelton Ter. in Homosassa due to a reported residential structure fire. Firefighters arrived on scene to find a single story residence with heavy smoke coming from the eaves. 

A 360 degree search of the property was conducted, and an offensive attack was initiated. The tenant advised firefighters that she awakeed to find smoke inside the residence, so she exited the residence and called for assistance from a neighbor’s house. 

The fire appeared to be primarily in the attic area above the kitchen and in the hallway to the bedrooms.  At this time, the cause of the fire has not been determined, but it's believed to be accidental and appears to have started in the kitchen. The fire was brought under control as of 4:20 am, and the last unit cleared the scene at 5:55 am.

No injuries were reported. Damages were estimated at approximately $100,000, which includes the property and the home's contents. The American Red Cross was contacted to provide assistance to the displaced family. The power company arrived on scene to disconnect the power, and the owner of the residence was advised of the situation. 

Firefighters from the Connell Heights, Homosassa, Hernando, and Pine Ridge fire stations responded to the world, along with a Safety Captain.
