Homosassa (Citrus County), Florida - At 11:28 am on Monday, November 7, 2022, Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to a home located on W. Yulee Dr. in Homosassa, due to the report of a residential structure fire.

Firefighters arrived onscene to find a two-story home approximately 25% involved with fire. An offensive attack mode was established, and the power company was contacted to secure utilities and check on low hanging power lines on the side of the residence as a potential hazard. The fire was brought under control as of 12:01 pm and the last unit cleared the scene at 1:10 pm.

Searches of the home confirmed that no occupants were inside the residence, but two dogs were found safe. A bird was found inside the home, deceased. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters determined that a handyman conducting work on the home encountered an electrical short, and when he returned to the home after retrieving a flashlight from his vehicle, he found that the front porch was on fire. The cause of the fire appears to be accidental. Damages were estimated at a total loss for the home and its contents due to smoke and water damage.

Firefighters from the Homosassa, Pine Ridge, Sugarmill Woods, Hernando, Connell Heights and Kensington fire stations responded to the fire, along with the rehab unit from the Citrus Springs Fire Station.
