Homosassa burn victim flown to trauma hospital after R.V. fire

Witnesses reported hearing a loud noise, then seeing the victim running from the R.V. in flames

Homosasss, Florida - One person was severely injured in a recreational vehicle (R.V.) fire, Sunday afternoon, Oct. 3, on W. Sasser St. in Homosassa. Firefighters with Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to the location, about 1:35 pm, in response to the report of a motor home fire. Firefighters arrived at the location to find a recreational vehicle engulfed in flames which also threatened two neighboring homes and a shed.

Medical care for the injured person was immediately established, and air support transport was requested for a trauma alert to an area hospital for the injured person. The Engine 18 crew from Sugarmill Woods Fire Station assisted the injured person while the Engine 3 crew from the Homosassa Fire Station worked to extinguish the fire and protect the neighboring structures.

Witnesses stated that the fire victim was working on the R.V. when they heard a noise then witnessed the victim running out of the R.V. in flames. The patient's care was transferred to Rescue 18 emergency medical services personnel; the patient was transported to a nearby helicopter landing zone and flown to a burn center.     

The fire was deemed under control at 1:47 pm, and the last unit cleared the scene at 4:02 pm. The RV was a total loss; the two neighboring homes and the shed received minor heat damage. The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to the scene to investigate. 

Firefighters from the Connell Heights, Homosassa, Sugarmill Woods, and Kensington fire stations responded to the scene, along with rescue units from the Sugarmill Woods and Pine Ridge fire stations.
