Firefighters extinguish Hernando fire that originated in pole barn

Citrus County Fire Rescue 

Hernando, Florida - At 5:03 pm on Thursday afternoon, May 20, Citrus County Fire Rescue was dispatched to a fire on N. Page Ave. in Hernando.

Battalion Chief 1 and the Engine 5 crew from the Hernando Fire station arrived first on scene at 5:09 pm to find an approximately 2,000 square foot 2-story pole barn, along with several small storage buildings and canopies, fully involved with fire, located approximately 100 yards from a wooded area.

The Hernando fire crew was charged with preventing the fire from traveling to the south and east. The Engine 20 crew from the Pine Ridge Fire Station arrived on scene at 5:16 pm and was assigned to protect a structure to the west of the fire, located on N. Hamlin Terrace and also with extinguishment of fire that was found in the wooded area. Brush and fire crews from the Kensington Fire Station assisted with the wooded area, and the Engine 8 crew from the Highlands Fire Station arrived on scene at 5:26 pm to protect structures to the north and assist with fire suppression to the northwest.   

The fire was called under control at 6:35 pm, and crews cleared the scene at 9:24 pm. Units remained on scene for an extended period due to the amount of overhaul and the size of the fire. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is unknown. 
 
Other fire stations and personnel that responded to assist with the fire included Safety Captain 102 with Tanker 5 from Hernando, Brush 23 and Engine 23 from Kensington, Rescue 7 from Connell Heights, Brush 20 from Pine Ridge, Tanker 8 from the Highlands, and the Rehab Unit from Citrus Springs.
