Hummer catches fire shortly after passenger fills gas cans in Homosassa; one injured

Citrus County Fire Rescue (CCFR) was contacted regarding a vehicle fire, at 10:52 am, Wednesday, May 12, in the area of W. Grover Cleveland Blvd. near the intersection of S. Alabama Ave. in Homosassa, Florida. 

The vehicle involved with fire was a 2004 Hummer H2, in which a passenger had just filled several gas cans with gasoline at the Citgo Food Mart and gas station located at 7593 W. Grover Cleveland Blvd. in Homosassa. The Engine 3 crew from the Homosassa Station arrived on scene at 10:59 am. The fire was deemed extinguished at 11:09 am, and the last unit cleared the scene at 1:36 pm.

According to CCFR spokesperson Cortney Marsh, four five-gallon containers were filled with gasoline in the back of the vehicle. She said that one person was injured, but refused to be transported for medical care, against medical advice. Ms. Marsh said that numerous news outlets acros the country had contacted her regarding the incident.

The Florida State Fire Marshal was on scene to conduct an investigation, and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection was contacted to coordinate a cleanup of the fuel spill.
