Juvenile transported to hospital following May 1 fire in Homosassa

Homosassa, Florida - Citrus County Fire Rescue was dispatched to a structure fire at a residence on S. Calais Terrace in Homosassa, at 5:36 pm on Saturday, May 1, and arrived on scene, at 5:44 pm, to find a 1,200 square foot, single story residence with light smoke coming from an open front door.  

Citrus County Sheriff’s Office deputies were already on scene, applying water to the bedroom that contained the fire. Incoming units were informed that the house was unoccupied, according to the homeowners who were on scene. Searches of the residence confirmed this information. Nature Coast EMS arrived on scene and assumed care of the home's occupants.

Active fire was found in the bedroom, and firefighters attacked the fire, which was extinguished quickly, and there was no further extension of the fire into the residence. The fire was called under control at 5:52 pm. The home was ventilated, and carbon monoxide levels were checked prior to firefighters clearing the scene at 7:09 pm.  

One juvenile was transported to a local hospital by ambulance, and the extent of the child's injuries was not known, according to the May 3 press release. There were no other injuries to civilians or firefighters. The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire. The American Red Cross was contacted to provide assistance to the occupants. 

Those who assisted with the fire included Safety Captain 102, Battalion Chief 1, the Engine 23 crew from Kensington Fire Station, and the Engine 20 crew from Pine Ridge Fire Station.
