Citrus County, Florida - On Sept. 25, 2023, a No Swim Advisory was issued for Fort Island Gulf Beach (on the Gulf of Mexico), located in Crystal River, Florida at 16000 W. Fort Island Trail, due to the water quality being rated "poor." Enterococcus bacteria was found in weekly water samples taken by the Florida Department of Health in Citrus County (DOH-Citrus) which participates in Florida’s 'Healthy Beaches Monitoring Program.'

Enterococci are enteric bacteria that inhabits the intestinal tract of humans and animals. Its presence in the water indicates fecal pollution and an increased risk to swimmers of contracting disease, infections or skin irritation. The bacteria could come from stormwater runoff, pets, wildlife, or human sewage.
