Aquifer update as of August 23, 2023, for SWFWMD North Region
In southwest Florida, 80% of the water is supplied by aquifers, which are underground layers of rock and sand that hold water. The local area is within the Southwest Florida Water Management District's North Region, which includes Citrus, Levy, Marion, Hernando, Sumter and Lake counties.
The North Region's aquifer level in percentiles, as of August 16, 2023, was 41%. The previous week was 41%, the same date last year was 57%, and the normal range is 25% to 75%.
The North Region's actual rainfall in inches for August 2023, as August 16, 2023, was 3.40 inches. The August historic average is 8.06 inches, and the August normal range is 6.55 - 9.62 inches. The 2023 year-to-date actual rainfall is 29.96 inches, the January - August historic average is 39.82 inches, and the January - August normal range is 35.39 - 44.67 inches.
The North Region's average historic rainfall (in inches) since 2011 is 53.45 inches, within the normal range of 48.62 - 58.07 inches. Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Lafayette, Madison, Suwannee, Taylor and Union counties, as well as portions of Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Jefferson, Levy and Putnam counties.
• St. Johns River Water Management District
Brevard, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Indian River, Nassau, Seminole, St. Johns and Volusia counties, as well as portions of Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Lake, Marion, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola and Putnam counties.
