Duke Energy implodes powerhouses of retired Crystal River coal plant
Crystal River, Florida - Duke Energy said goodbye to an era - with a bang - at 8:00 am, on Saturday, June 12, using more that 500 explosives to bring down the two power houses of the Crystal River coal plant, built in the 1960s, that generated 915 megawatts of energy for more than 50 years.
The coal plant was retired in 2018 when Duke Energy openined the Citrus Combined Cycle Station, which harnesses energy from natural gas, as part of a campaign to replace coal plants with cleaner alternatives.
The metal and concrete remains from the 200 feet-tall by 125 feet-wide structures will be recycled. Two 500 feet- tall stacks remain that will be imploded at a later date.
