Deer hunting season in Zone C has ended, but the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) efforts to monitor and respond to chronic wasting disease (CWD) continue. Throughout the season, hunters have played a crucial role by submitting samples from harvested deer. The FWC urges anyone who sees a sick, abnormally thin, or road-killed deer to report its location by calling the CWD hotline at 866-CWD-WATCH (866-293-9282).
CWD is a contagious disease of the brain and central nervous system that is always fatal to deer, elk, moose and caribou. It was first detected in Florida in June 2023, and it is one of the most serious wildlife diseases facing state wildlife agencies because of its potential to negatively impact deer populations.
